Rapé - Yawanawa Rebirth

This exceptional Yawanawa Rapé is carefully crafted by a young member of the tribe named Peu, who devoted three years of his life to a spiritual diet and the traditional practices of his people. As a key cultural and spiritual ambassador, Peu's profound knowledge of the Yawanawa traditions is evident in the exceptional quality of his Rapé.

The Yawanawa tribe nearly lost their traditions after making contact with the outside world in the last century. However, a cultural revival began in the late 1980s when their new chief led efforts to reclaim their heritage. They expelled rubber tappers, missionaries, and alcohol from their community and focused on recovering their traditional medicines, such as Rume (Rapé) and Uni (Ayahuasca), with guidance from the last two living medicine men of their people.

In this period of renewal, the Yawanawa tribe relocated their community for a fresh start and named their new home "Nova Esperança," meaning "New Hope." They also began their tradition of yearly cultural festivals, inviting the outside world to experience their rich cultural heritage.

Yawanawa Rapé

For the more traditional members of the tribe, Rapé is considered truly Yawanawa only if it follows the simple recipe of tobacco and Tsunu ashes. The Tsunu tree is a native species of the region, and its bark is burned to create the ashes for the blend.
